Engineer & Secondary Roads

The Marshall County Engineer is responsible for the planning, direction, coordination, and management of the County Secondary Roads Department. The department provides for the safe, efficient, and cost-effective construction, maintenance, and engineering of the county's secondary road system, ensuring quality workmanship and responsible stewardship of taxpayer resources. The Secondary Roads Department maintains Marshall County's transportation infrastructure, including 206 miles of paved roads, 710 miles of granular-surfaced roads, 18 miles of dirt roads, and the county's bridges. Responsibilities include road and bridge construction, pavement preservation, gravel road maintenance, snow and ice removal, and the design, contracting, and inspection of transportation improvement projects.

The county road system does not include roads within the corporate limits of cities or highways maintained by the Iowa Department of Transportation, including U.S. Highway 30, U.S. Highway 330, Iowa Highway 14, Iowa Highway 96, and Iowa Highway 146.

The department is staffed by 40 employees, including 35 maintenance personnel. The Engineer's Office, along with the Secondary Roads Shop, is located in Marshalltown, with satellite motor grader sheds strategically located throughout the county to provide efficient service to all areas.
