Septic
Many properties in Marshall County are not located in areas where public sewer services are available. These properties rely on on-site subsurface sewage disposal systems, commonly known as septic systems. A septic system is designed to treat and dispose of household wastewater while protecting groundwater and surface water from contamination.
How a Septic System Works
A septic system consists of four main components:
Sewer Line
The sewer line connects the plumbing in your home or building to the septic tank.
Septic Tank
The septic tank collects wastewater and allows solids to settle while bacterial action helps break down waste (primary treatment). A properly functioning septic tank retains solids and produces a more consistent effluent flow.
- Septic tanks installed since 1991 are required to have two compartments.
- Since 2000, septic tanks are required to have an effluent filter to help protect the leaching system.
Distribution System
The distribution system directs wastewater flow from the septic tank to the leaching area.
Leaching Field
The leaching field distributes treated wastewater into the surrounding soil.
Common types of leaching systems include:
- Trenches
- Galleries
- Drywells
- Plastic leaching units
Septic System Maintenance
Proper maintenance helps protect your property, groundwater, and the environment.
Important maintenance practices include:
- Have your septic tank pumped and serviced every three to five years.
- Do not drive vehicles or operate heavy equipment over the septic system unless it was specifically designed for that purpose.
- If your septic tank has an outlet (effluent) filter, have it cleaned routinely. Cleaning frequency depends on the type and amount of wastewater entering the tank.
