Recording DD214 Discharge Papers

Veterans may record their DD214 discharge paper with the County Auditor & Recorder for permanant safekeeping and to help verify eligibilty for benefits and claims.

Important Information

• The original DD214 must be presented for recording.
• A certified copy can only be issued after the document has been officially recorded.
• The DD214 must be recorded before a military exemption can be applied toward property tax reduction.

Need a Replacement DD214?

If your DD214 has been lost or destroyed, you may request a certified copy from:

• The National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
• Another authorized records custodian listed on the "Request Pertaining to Military Records" form.

You may:

• Pick up the request form at the Auditor & Recorder's Office, or
• Download the form from the National Archives and Records Administration website: National Archives Military Records Request Page

Confidentiality of Military Records

Military records maintained by the County Auditor & Recorder are confidential under Iowa law, effective July 1, 2003.

Unless otherwise authorized by the veteran, these records may only be viewed or copied by:

• The veteran
• Immediate family members
• A person authorized in writing by the veteran
• A licensed funeral director caring for a deceased veteran
• Government agencies when required by law
• A court through a lawful court order
• Any requester if the record is more than 75 years old
