Veteran Memorial

The idea for a Marshall County Veteran Memorial started in the early fall of 2023 at a Veterans Affairs Commission meeting. The Board of Supervisors Chair Jarret Heil suggested locating the memorial on the southwest corner of the Courthouse Square. This idea progressed with the addition of a design team:  Kevin Huseboe, Mike Hanken, Deb Millizer, Randy Kessler, and Vic Hellberg.

Fundraising for the memorial began in November 2023. Four months later, all the funds were raised! McCall Monument in Newton, Iowa, ordered the granite and eventually completed the benches and engravings. Scout, the eagle atop the granite column, was carved overseas. The center post was done in South Dakota.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held April 11, 2024, with the three Commissioners (Grimes, Streets, Kessler), IVH Commandant Todd Jacobus, Jarret Heil, chair of the Board of Supervisors, and the Design Team turning the dirt.

The community provided a lot of private fundraising. The Martha Ellen Tye Foundation and Marshall County met the Martha Ellen Tye Foundation challenge grant and provided the site. Con-Struct and CTI Ready Mix were more than generous and provided the grading, concrete, and pad free of cost. McCall Monument also provided many of their services at a reduced cost.

The Dedication for the “Symbol of honor, remembrance and gratitude” for the Marshall County Veterans Memorial was held on Saturday morning, March 25, 2025.

The First Memorial was held on May 25, 2026, which also included several veterans receiving Quilts of Valor.
